Here are some facts on dropouts in Nepal.
Depressing Attitude of Teachers
According to Lalumaya Gurung Biswakarma who is a Psycho-Social counsellor, one of the factors that are causing children to dropout from schools in Nepal was the depressing attitude of teachers. Such behaviour of teachers is responsible for the development of negative effect on children.
Corporal Punishments
As per an NGO in Nepal called Centre for Victims of Torture (CVICT) which is working towards resolving issues in children like corporal punishments in schools, sexual abuse, rape, torture etc; corporal punishments are also one of the factors that are responsible for the increasing rate of dropouts in Nepal. This phenomenon is peculiar in rural schools where schools are not managed properly.
Unavailability of Female Teachers
There is lack of female teachers in Nepal which is probably influencing the rate of dropouts amongst female students. There are only 12% female teachers in Nepal.
Enrolment versus the Dropout Rate
Although, 89% of students in age group 5 to 14 years are enrolled in the school the rate of dropouts in Nepal still remains critical. According to an NGO called Child Workers in Nepal (CWIN), the rate of dropouts in primary schools is as high as 40%.
Common Causes of Dropouts in Nepal
Some of the common causes for dropouts in Nepal are inefficiently managed schools, unavailability of proper teachers and incapability of parents to bear the school expenses of children due to poverty.
Teacher Training Programme
Teacher training programme which was started by CVICT, with the help of Save the Children (Norway) has helped to change the attitude of teachers thereby reducing the rate of dropouts in Nepal. Through this programme, 1246 teachers were trained. These teachers belonged to the rural areas from western regions.
